A striking antique Anglo-Indian carved oak hall table, dating to around 1900 and decorated throughout with deep relief carving, geometric chip-cut borders and a beautifully pierced cresting rail. The raised superstructure shelf is typical of British-India furniture made for export, and the front features a single drawer with carved facade. The top back crest rail features the moto “PRAESTO ET PERSISTO”
It’s Latin, and it translates to:
“I stand firm and I persist”
The cabriole forelegs are unusual for this style and give the piece a lovely stance. Full of character, originality, and that unmistakable handcrafted detail you only get from period Indian work.
Perfect as a hall table, console, side table or statement decorative piece.
Condition
Solid and sturdy. Age-related wear, surface marks, polish variations and old imperfections to the top, all in keeping with age and the hand-carved nature. Drawer runs well. Overall presents beautifully.
