Antique Bombard Jug / Leather And Silver / Tankard / Blackjack
Antique Bombard Jug / Leather And Silver / Tankard / Blackjack
Bombards are a significant English tradition, serving as tankards and pouring jugs. Tankards are referred to as "Blackjacks," while the larger vessels or jugs are known as "bombards." Crafted in a mould from wet leather, earlier examples were stitched together.
This specific bombard is an early 20th-century jug with a silver rim, stamped underneath as Ross Winchester, Sheffield 1906. A fine English antique piece.
Frederick James Ross of Winchester was a skilled craftsman during the flourishing Arts & Crafts movement in the late 19th century. His Winchester workshop produced many high-quality reproductions of Medieval items, including these ‘Bombard’ jugs, completed with silver rims from their own silver workshop. Great collectors piece.
Condition report - a very well made and sturdy piece. The interior could do with some form of cleaning.
