A magnificent late-Victorian carved oak bureau bookcase, richly decorated with deep floral panels, scrollwork borders and bold blind-carved roundels. It has that proper statement-piece presence - solid, impressive and full of character.
The fall-front desk opens to reveal a traditional fitted interior with small drawers, pigeonholes and a central cupboard. As with all good antique bureaux, the pull-out support bars must be extended before lowering the writing flap - a lovely bit of old-world craftsmanship that’s still fully functional.
Above the bureau, the carved cupboard doors open to fitted shelving. The shelves are later additions, making the top section far more practical for modern use while still keeping the original carved frontage.
Below are two small drawers over three long drawers with brass handles that suit the look well. A bold and decorative piece with real presence in any hallway, study, living room or period-style home.
Condition
Good, solid antique condition with age-related marks, shrinkage lines, scuffs and expected wear from long use. Carvings remain crisp. Some historic worm traces to the backs of drawers fully treated as standard. Drawers run well for age. A big, honest, character-rich piece.
