Antique Chinese Hardwood Scholar’s Pedestal Writing Desk
An impressive Chinese hardwood scholar’s writing desk, of traditional pedestal form, combining elegant proportions, fine craftsmanship and a rich sense of history.
A wonderful example of Chinese furniture design, with its beautifully balanced form, warm hardwood tones and traditional detailing. The desk has a commanding presence without being excessively large, making it equally suited to a period property, country house interior or contemporary home.
The traditional design reflects the Chinese scholar’s furniture tradition, in which practical writing furniture was created with an emphasis on craftsmanship, proportion and understated elegance.
Three-Section Construction
An especially appealing feature of this desk is its construction in three separate sections, comprising the two supporting pedestals and central desk section.
This traditional arrangement allows the desk to be dismantled for transportation and access, making it considerably easier to move than its substantial appearance might suggest.
History & Provenance
The desk is accompanied by historical documentation from a Hong Kong antique dealer, including a Letter of Antiquity.
This accompanying paperwork provides an interesting connection to the desk’s previous history and will be supplied with the piece. Copies of the documents are included within the listing, with previous customers’ personal information redacted.
The desk is believed to date from the late Qing dynasty or early 20th century, although its precise age has not been independently authenticated.
Condition Report
The desk presents with an attractive, established patina and age-related signs of use, including surface marks and variations in the colour and finish of the hardwood.
These characteristics contribute to its authentic appearance and individual character.
The desk separates into three sections for ease of transportation.
