Antique Oak Buffet Sideboard with Gothic Aesthetic Movement Design
A striking Victorian Aesthetic Movement oak buffet / sideboard dating to circa 1875–1890.
This is a beautifully detailed piece, featuring a raised twin-panelled superstructure with pierced roundel motifs and notched cut-out decoration. The upper section is supported by carved brackets with geometric and foliate carving — very much in keeping with the Aesthetic Movement’s love of stylised form and craftsmanship.
Below sits a three-door base, each panel decorated with incised geometric and stylised cross motifs. The carving is crisp and full of character. Internally, the cupboard houses a combination of sliding trays, shelves and a divided drawer compartment — practical as well as decorative.
The proportions are excellent. It has presence without being overly bulky, and would work brilliantly in a dining room, hallway, kitchen, or even as a statement retail display piece.
The oak has a rich honey tone with lovely grain throughout. A proper Victorian piece.
Condition
Structurally solid and sturdy.
General age-related wear throughout including surface marks, knocks and patina consistent with a 19th-century piece. Some historic wear to the top surface as photographed. Interior trays and shelves show expected use-related marks.
Doors sit well and open as they should. No major structural issues.
Overall good, honest antique condition with character.
