An unusual early 20th-century oak doctor's examination couch by Philip Harris & Co Ltd of Birmingham, complete with the original maker's plaque.
Constructed from solid oak with a beautifully figured grain and warm honey-coloured finish, the couch features a black Rexine-covered padded seat and an adjustable reclining backrest, supported by a traditional wooden ratchet mechanism.
The substantial oak base incorporates two generously sized drawers with brass drop handles, together with a pull-out slide beneath the raised headrest, providing useful storage and working space.
A wonderful surviving piece of British medical history, combining practical craftsmanship with the character of early 20th-century institutional furniture.
An interesting statement piece for a period interior, vintage-inspired treatment or tattooists room, photographic studio or collector of medical antiques.
Condition Report
Good antique condition with age-related surface marks, variations in the finish and signs of previous use. There is an area of finish loss to the pull-out slide, along with light wear to the oak framework. The black Rexine upholstery displays light signs of age and use. The backrest adjusts using its wooden support mechanism, and both drawers and the pull-out slide are present.
