A fantastic large antique oak partner’s desk with genuine British Railways provenance and bags of original character.
This is a seriously substantial desk, constructed in oak with a large figured top, twin pedestal design and panelled sides. Most importantly, it retains original British Railways internal traffic labels addressed to the Station Master at Altrincham, giving the piece a wonderful documented link to its former railway life.
The desk is double sided, with drawers and attractive carved shell-style handles, making it a particularly impressive piece from every angle. The deep pedestals, panelled ends and generous kneehole give it the proper imposing look you want from an old station or commercial desk.
The oak top is especially attractive, with fabulous figuring, grain and years of accumulated character. This isn’t a pristine polished reproduction – it looks every inch the working piece of furniture it has been.
A superb statement desk for a large home office, study, commercial interior, shop, hotel or restaurant, and an especially interesting piece for anyone with an interest in British railway history.
Condition Report
Good solid antique condition with plenty of genuine age and use throughout.
There are numerous knocks, scratches, scuffs, marks, areas of wear and losses to the old finish, particularly around the pedestals, drawer fronts and plinths. The top has considerable historic marking and wear which, in our opinion, adds enormously to its character.
The drawer interiors also show substantial historic use and staining. There are no keys with the desk.
The British Railways paper labels are naturally aged, worn and partially damaged but remain clearly identifiable, including the wording “Station Master – Altrincham”.
This is an old working piece of furniture and is being sold with its age, wear and patina retained rather than heavily restored.
