Antique Oak Roll Top Desk Office Furniture Pedestal Tambour c.1900 Edwardian

A handsome antique oak roll-top pedestal desk dating from the late Victorian or Edwardian period, circa 1900.

This is a substantial, practical and highly decorative piece of antique office furniture, offering a generous working area together with excellent storage. Its useful proportions make it suitable for a home office, study, library, writing room or commercial interior.

Constructed predominantly in oak, the desk has a warm aged colour, attractive natural grain and a pleasingly timeworn finish. The classic curved tambour front is formed from narrow oak slats and rolls smoothly back into the upper section to reveal a well-fitted interior.

The interior includes a spacious writing surface, pigeonholes, open document compartments and two small stationery drawers. Beneath these are two banks of four graduated pedestal drawers, together with a wide central drawer, providing ample storage for paperwork, stationery and office essentials.

Angus of London & Glasgow was a British furniture maker and retailer associated with the late Victorian and Edwardian period. The firm supplied substantial domestic and office furniture, including desks, cabinets and other high-quality practical pieces. Its name is particularly associated with antique roll-top desks and office furniture from around the turn of the 20th century.

The tambour opens and closes correctly. The desk also retains its clever internal locking mechanism: when the tambour is rolled down, the pedestal drawers are automatically secured. Once the tambour is pushed fully back into the open position, the drawers are released and can be opened.

There is no key, so the tambour itself cannot be locked shut. However, the automatic drawer-locking mechanism continues to operate through the movement of the tambour, making it an ingenious and useful feature.

The desk separates into three main sections—the upper desk section and two pedestal bases—making it considerably easier to transport and position within the home.

Condition Report

Presented in good, solid and usable antique condition, with wear and marks consistent with its age and many years of practical use.

The tambour opens and closes correctly, and the automatic drawer-locking mechanism is working. There is no key, so the tambour does not lock shut.

The writing surface has numerous historic marks, scratches, ink marks, staining and areas of wear, including a noticeable red mark. There are further knocks, scuffs, scratches, small losses and variations in colour across the exterior, drawer fronts, edges and tambour slats.

Some drawer interiors have ink staining, marks and general wear from previous use. There is age-related wear around the lock plate and front edge, together with a small split to the timber on the right-hand curved side section.

These signs of use form part of the desk’s honest working character rather than detracting from its decorative appeal. Please study all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition report.
