An exceptional and highly decorative pair of large 19th-century Dutch brass and copper lidded flagons, lavishly worked by hand with intricate repoussé and chased decoration.

These are genuinely unusual statement pieces, displaying two different and historically important Dutch coats of arms. One vessel bears the Coat of Arms of Amsterdam, recognisable by its three vertical St Andrew’s crosses beneath a crown and flanked by rampant lions. Its companion displays the Coat of Arms of the Province of Zeeland, with a rampant lion emerging from stylised waves—an emblem associated with Zeeland’s famous motto, “Luctor et Emergo”, meaning “I struggle and emerge.”

The bulbous ovoid bodies are profusely decorated with scrolling foliage, stylised leaves, flowers, shell-like motifs and repeating geometric borders. The designs have been worked in repoussé from behind and chased from the front, creating wonderfully tactile raised decoration with finely punched and engraved background detail.

Both vessels have fluted cylindrical necks, closely fitted lids with integrated handles and substantial looping side handles. The warm yellow brass is complemented by contrasting copper elements, including the particularly attractive red-copper lower collar seen on one vessel. Historic soldered construction remains visible in places, giving a fascinating insight into how these impressive pieces were assembled.

Although clearly belonging together, the vessels are not completely identical. Their individual heraldic subjects, differing decorative bands and subtle variations in construction give them far more character and interest than an ordinary matching pair.

Each vessel is presented on a bespoke circular wooden stand raised on three rounded bun feet. The warm tone of the timber works beautifully against the aged brass and copper while providing an elegant and stable presentation.

At approximately 66cm tall, these are substantial decorative objects with tremendous visual presence. They would look magnificent displayed together on a large sideboard or console table, positioned either side of a fireplace, or used as dramatic floor-standing pieces in a hallway, drawing room, boutique hotel or restaurant interior.

The vessels would also make extraordinary lamp bases if professionally converted. Their generous scale and architectural form would suit large linen or pleated shades, creating a highly individual pair of statement lamps. They are not currently wired or adapted for lighting, and any conversion must be undertaken by a suitably qualified professional.

A rare opportunity to acquire a striking pair of antique Dutch metalware combining hand-worked craftsmanship, regional heraldry and outstanding decorative appeal.

Condition Report

Presented in good decorative antique condition, with surface wear and irregularities consistent with their considerable age and handmade construction.

The brass and copper retain a beautiful warm patina, with areas of tarnishing, oxidation, minor verdigris, small dents and natural undulation to the hand-worked metal. Historic soldering and old repairs are visible around some of the handles, rims and fittings.

There are differences in the decorative bands and lower construction of the two vessels, including the contrasting copper collar on one. The wooden presentation stands have general marks and wear and may be later bespoke additions.

The interiors and undersides show age-related wear and residue. The vessels have not been tested for holding liquids and are sold as decorative objects only.

Their historic wear, handmade variations form an important part of their character. Please study all photographs carefully, as these form part of the condition report.
