Victorian Taxidermy Water Rail Bird in Glazed Display Case
A charming Victorian taxidermy water rail (Rallus aquaticus), presented within a traditional black-painted wooden display case with glazed front and sides.
The bird is mounted in a natural standing position amongst dried grasses, foliage and textured groundwork, with a hand-painted countryside backdrop creating an atmospheric rural setting.
The water rail is a fascinating British wetland bird, recognised for its secretive nature, distinctive plumage and long, slender bill. Often heard rather than seen, these elusive birds inhabit reedbeds, marshes and other wetland environments.
A wonderful example of traditional Victorian natural-history taxidermy, reflecting the period’s fascination with British wildlife and the art of recreating natural habitats.
An attractive and unusual decorative piece, ideal for a country-house interior, traditional study, library, curiosity cabinet or collection of antique taxidermy.
Condition Report
Good antique condition overall, with age-related wear consistent with its considerable age. The bird retains its natural standing pose and attractive plumage.
The interior groundwork and dried vegetation show some age-related deterioration and discolouration. The black-painted wooden case displays surface marks, areas of finish loss and general signs of use.
