An exceptional and highly dramatic example of late 19th-century British taxidermy. This substantial, museum-sized display case features a classic narrative-driven woodland habitat diorama. The central focus is a beautifully preserved adult Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes) depicted resting over its fresh prey—a male Ring-necked Pheasant (Phasianus colchicus). Adding immense charm and rarity to the scene, an Eurasian Red Squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) is mounted on an overhead mossy branch, clutching a nut.
Presented in its original ebonized wooden case with a distinctive gold-painted inner slip frame, this piece encapsulates the bold storytelling aesthetic of the Victorian natural history movement. It serves as a striking statement piece for country house interiors, traditional libraries, or collections of curiosity.

Condition Report
  • Taxidermy & Interior: The specimens are securely mounted and display remarkable character. Given its antique age, the fox and squirrel fur show light, authentic historic fading and minor cosmetic wear. The pheasant plumage exhibits bold coloration with expected age-related feather settling. The naturalistic groundwork remains stable and highly detailed.
  • Casing & Frame: The substantial wood and glass casing is structurally sound and robust. The black ebonized finish on the top and sides shows authentic historic scuffing, edge wear, and minor paint chips that speak to its genuine antique heritage. The internal gold-painted border is intact with a rich, aged patina. The original glass front panel is clear and securely fitted
