A striking large vintage ceramic apothecary leech jar, made in the traditional Victorian pharmacy style.
Of substantial proportions, the jar has a cream glazed body decorated with cobalt blue and gilt detailing, with LEECHES prominently displayed across the front. Applied scroll handles sit to either side, while the removable domed lid is pierced with numerous ventilation holes and finished with a blue and gilt finial.
Historically, leech jars were used by chemists and apothecaries to keep medicinal leeches alive and accessible for bloodletting treatments. This later example makes a particularly unusual decorative piece and would work brilliantly in a collection of antique medical or pharmacy pieces, a curiosity cabinet or simply as a statement object.

Good vintage condition overall with age-related wear, rubbing and losses to the gilt decoration, surface marks and some discolouration consistent with use and age. No obvious major damage
