A striking commemorative ceramic leech jar produced for the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain, celebrating its 150th anniversary, 1841–1991.
Finished in a rich cobalt blue glaze with extensive gilt decoration, the jar has a large gilt LEECHES cartouche to the front and the Royal Pharmaceutical Society crest and commemorative dates to the reverse.
The removable tiered domed cover is pierced with numerous ventilation holes, replicating the form of traditional 19th-century chemist and apothecary leech jars, which were designed to house medicinal leeches.
A particularly decorative piece of British pharmaceutical memorabilia and an unusual addition to a collection of chemist, apothecary or medical-related antiques and curiosities.
Condition Report
Good vintage condition overall. There is some light surface wear and rubbing to the gilt decoration, particularly around the edges and lid, together with minor marks consistent with age and display. No obvious significant chips or cracks visible
Dimensions
Length 23cm
Height 36cm
