A striking early to mid-20th century ceramic chemist/apothecary jar, prominently inscribed “TAMARINDS” to the front.
Of substantial proportions, the jar is finished in a warm ivory glaze with vivid cobalt blue and gilt decoration, twin scroll handles and a pedestal base. The removable domed lid is topped with a cobalt blue and gilt finial.
Tamarinds have a long history of use in traditional pharmacy and apothecary preparations, particularly for digestive purposes, making this an interesting piece of vintage chemist and pharmacy ware as well as a superb decorative object.
At 36cm high, it has plenty of presence and would look fantastic displayed in a kitchen, bathroom, study, shop interior or amongst a collection of antique and vintage pharmacy pieces.
The jar is unmarked, so no attribution to a particular manufacturer has been made.
Condition Report
Good condition overall with wear consistent with age and use. There is rubbing and loss to the gilt decoration, particularly around the lid, base, handles and finial, together with minor surface marks and some staining/marks to the interior.
