A beautiful set of six Victorian mahogany dining chairs, dating to circa 1870.
Each chair features an elegant open balloon back with a shaped scalloped crest, giving the set a particularly decorative silhouette without being overly fussy. The rich mahogany frames have developed a lovely warm colour and patina, with turned front legs and gently swept rear supports typical of the period.
The chairs retain their traditional removable drop-in seats, currently upholstered in a warm ochre/gold velvet. Drop-in seats are particularly practical on antique dining chairs, allowing the upholstery to be easily changed in the future without interfering with the original chair frames.
A very attractive and usable set of six, ideal around an antique dining table but equally at home mixed into a more contemporary interior. Their relatively compact proportions also make them a great option where larger Victorian dining chairs can feel too imposing.
Condition Report
Good antique condition with wear commensurate with age and use. The mahogany frames display various small knocks, marks and areas of wear to the finish, together with visible historic joint lines and minor imperfections. The velvet upholstery has some light marks and signs of previous use.
As with all antique seating, there are variations between individual chairs consistent with their age and handmade construction. Please study all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition report. Overall good useable condition.
