A striking late Victorian carved oak box settle, dating to circa 1880–1900 and displaying strong Gothic Revival influence.
The high panelled back is extensively decorated with geometric and foliate carving, flanked by sweeping arms terminating in wonderfully characterful carved bird or mythical beast figures. Further carved decoration continues across the apron and large front panel, giving the settle an impressive architectural appearance.
The hinged seat lifts to reveal a useful storage compartment beneath, making this a particularly practical piece for a hallway, boot room or entrance as well as a highly decorative piece of period furniture.
The oak has developed a rich, dark colour with lighter areas of wear across the seat, arms and carved details, which really bring out the depth of the carving.
Condition Report
Good antique condition overall with wear, marks, knocks and surface variation consistent with age and use. There are historic repairs and alterations. We believe the internal base panel and rear/back panel have been replaced at some point in the settle’s life along with its hinges. There is general wear to the finish and some movement/age-related marks to the timber.
