A late Victorian pitch pine single-door wardrobe with twin lower drawers, retaining its original carved details and panelled construction. The base is hand-inscribed “Major P. Wiltshire”, linking it directly to Major Percy Wiltshire of the Royal Field Artillery - born 1873 in Great Yarmouth, son of a local solicitor, commanding officer of the 251st Siege Battery in the First World War, and killed in action in France in April 1917.
A rare surviving piece with verifiable provenance, making it both a functional storage cabinet and a genuine historical artefact.
Condition:
The wardrobe has been previously painted and later stripped; remnants of old paint remain in carvings, grain lines and mouldings.
Age-related wear throughout including scratches, small losses, knocks and wear to edges.
Drawers run well for age. Interior shelves are later but fit well.
A solid, characterful example with an untouched, honest finish.
Approximate Dimensions:
Length 101cm
Width 46cm
Height 193.5cm
