Victorian Taxidermy Corncrake in Glazed Display Case
A charming Victorian taxidermy corncrake (Crex crex), beautifully presented within a traditional black-painted wooden display case, complete with glazed front and sides.
The bird is mounted in a natural standing position amongst an arrangement of dried grasses, foliage and textured groundwork, with a hand-painted countryside backdrop creating a wonderfully atmospheric rural scene.
The corncrake displays its distinctive warm buff and brown plumage, with darker streaking across the back, rich reddish-brown wing feathers and slender legs.
A fascinating example of Victorian natural-history taxidermy, reflecting the period’s enthusiasm for collecting and displaying British wildlife.
Corncrakes were once a familiar sight and sound in Britain’s summer meadows but are now considerably rarer, making this an interesting addition to a natural-history collection.
An attractive decorative piece, ideal for a country-house interior, traditional study, library, curiosity cabinet or collector of antique taxidermy.
Condition Report
Good antique condition overall, with age-related wear consistent with its considerable age. The bird retains its attractive plumage and natural standing pose.
The interior groundwork and dried vegetation display some age-related deterioration and discolouration. The black-painted wooden case has surface marks, areas of finish loss and general signs of use.
There is a vertical split to the rear backing board, which does not detract significantly from the appearance when displayed. The glazing displays some age-related marks and dust.
