An impressive Victorian taxidermy diorama featuring a beautifully preserved red fox accompanied by three rabbits, arranged within a large glazed display case depicting a naturalistic woodland scene.
The fox is positioned on raised ground amongst an arrangement of tree bark, moss, dried grasses and natural foliage, with three rabbits displayed at varying levels below, creating a wonderfully detailed countryside setting.
The substantial wooden case has an ebonised finish, with an attractive gilt foliate border surrounding the glazed front. The combination of the dark exterior, decorative gold detailing and richly textured interior gives the piece a striking appearance.
A wonderful example of traditional Victorian taxidermy, reflecting the period’s fascination with natural history and the art of recreating wildlife in realistic settings.
Its generous proportions make this a particularly eye-catching display piece, ideal for a country house, traditional study, library, gentleman’s club, period interior or collector of natural history curiosities.
An unusual and decorative piece of Victorian country-house history, with plenty of character and presence.
Condition Report
Good antique condition overall, with age-related wear consistent with its considerable age. The ebonised case displays surface marks, areas of finish loss and general signs of use, while the decorative gilt detailing remains attractive.
The naturalistic groundwork shows areas of deterioration and loose or displaced material, as commonly encountered with antique taxidermy displays. The fox and rabbits remain presented within their original-style woodland setting.
There is some age-related wear to the interior and glazing, together with a small area of separation visible at the lower corner of the glazed front.
